Medicare Supplements are also known as Medigap. Not counting the high deductible plans, there are up to 10 standardized Medigap plans in 50 states. The plans are lettered from A-N and offer a range of different benefits.

Medicare Supplements help you cover costs such as copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance. All of which you have to pay out-of-pocket with Original Medicare. Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive and complete Medigap plan. Out of 10 Medigap plans, only Plan F offers both Original Medicare Part B deductible and Part B excess charges simultaneously. This is apart from the other benefits it offers, covering more in percentage than other Medigap plans.

Because it offers the most benefits, it’s easy to assume that Medicare Supplement Plan F rates are the most expensive. This is not necessarily true. The prices of Medigap Plan F vary depending on your age, gender, smoking state, and state of living. If you enroll for Plan F after your Open Enrollment Period, your insurance provider may charge your higher premium depending on your health status.

What is Open Enrollment Period (OEP)?

Your Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is a 6-month period that opens in the month of your 65th birthday. If you have Medicare Part B enrollment, you can also enroll for a Medigap Plan F. By doing this; you will get the best rates available, regardless of your health status.

What are Age-Rating Models for Medicare Supplement Plan F?

Your Medicare Supplement Plan F rate may be based on one of three age-rating models. With a Community-rated age model, you will pay the same for your Medigap Plan, regardless of your age. Every member of the community will pay an equal premium. With an Issue-Age rate, your premiums depend on how old you were when you enrolled for the plan. An Age-Issue rate is best suited for people who join when they are young. An Attained-Age rate may also decide your premiums. As you age, your premiums will increase.
